An Independent Advisor is their own boss.  An entrepreneur who owns their practice. An Independent Advisor has the freedom to run their practice in a manner that is best for them and their clients.

What is an Independent Advisor?

Why Not Go to Another Wirehouse?

Many brokers find that moving to another wirehouse does not place them in a better position to manage their client assets.  In many cases moving to a wirehouse is not beneficial to clients.  Moving to Independence provides you the opportunity to serve your clients better, without any incentives or demands to sell any products you don't think is best for your clients.  Finally, in most cases, being independent will net you more than the check a wirehouse will pay you ~ in a short amount of time.

Can I keep my brokerage business?

Yes, you can keep your brokerage business to go independent.  We will help you align with a broker-dealer that allows you to have your own advisory firm.  This allows you to receive commissions for your brokerage business and at the same time build your advisory practice.  We will help you make an educated decision on the practicality and economics of keeping your brokerage business or going fee-only as an advisor.

Will I get sued if I go Independent?

It's unlikely if you a broker with a major wirehouse.  Most wirehouses are a member of The Broker-Dealer Protocol which member firms agree to the terms of brokers moving from one firm to another.  It is important to follow the protocol, and we can assist you with those terms in our Transition Management process.

Establishing your own RIA can protect your advisory business from negative news, mergers and acquisitions, or failures of your independent broker-dealer.  In many cases, you may establish an RIA and maintain your brokerage business at the broker-dealer.

I am already with an Independent Broker/Dealer, why would I start my own RIA?

Isn't Independence Risky?

The major risk is that clients do not move with you to the independent platform which keeps you from obtaining your required income cash flow.   As for the ongoing operations, we believe that the advisory business - which virtually eliminates conflicts of interests, has transparency, and allows you the ability to select the best investments for your clients -  actually provides the lowest risk for a financial services firm.  Additionally, you will have Errors and Omissions Insurance.

The transition involves meeting with clients or mailing them the paperwork needed for the switch to independence.  Investor FAN will coordinate all the mailings and paperwork for your transition.  While it does take work, many advisors will tell you that the conversations with clients typically go very positively.  The move provides you the chance to speak with your clients about the exciting benefits of being independent and sometimes results in the client entrusting you with other assets that you weren't managing at the wirehouse.  Clients also tend to appreciate the entrepreneurial spirit demonstrated by those starting their own firm.

How hard is the Transition?
